Where music labels belong

Review record: the company-type placement is approved. You already approved keeping companies together while describing what sort of company each is. Music Label follows that rule, rather than being a separate basic kind alongside companies, people, songs and artists.

Answered 5 October 2026: recommendation accepted. The recorded decision settles this choice. Exact definitions and implementation remain separate work.

Keep Music Label as a company type

Recommendation: track a music label through the existing company model, with Music Label describing its type. People could find labels through Companies → Music Labels and open the same kind of profile used for other organizations. A label's campaigns, creative work and supported relationships would connect to that identity. There would not be a second identity simply because it is also a label.

Here, company follows the existing model: it includes the businesses and brands we track. This recommendation does not require every label or imprint to be a separately incorporated business. A label's public identity, its parent and its legal ownership need evidence; sharing a company model does not collapse them into one organization.

Checked example: Warner Music Group identifies Warner Records, Atlantic and Parlophone as record labels on its recording-artists page. Under this recommendation, Warner Records would be a company profile described as Music Label. Its artists, recordings and work would remain distinct things connected when sources support the relationship. This is an inspected external example, not a claim that the library already contains that profile.

Counterexample: a musician releasing their own recording does not, by that fact alone, establish a separate label identity. Nor does a label credit establish every right or business relationship. Warner Music Group's FAQ distinguishes inquiries about sound recordings from those about musical compositions. We should preserve that distinction rather than infer ownership or publishing from the word label.

Alternative: keep Music Label as a separate basic kind of entity. That makes the distinction explicit at the first classification step. It also requires company browsing, profile behavior and creation rules to include another kind, and a rule for avoiding duplicate company and label identities. I recommend the company type because it preserves label discovery without that extra split.

What the live check changes

The database offers Music Label in both places, but the checked entity rows currently use neither label. That does not prove no label organizations are present: some companies have no type assigned. A name search returned The Atlantic and Virgin Atlantic, for example; matching a word is not evidence that either should be classified as a record label. Their classifications remain untouched.

The interface, backend and database also disagree about which basic kinds can be created. That is a separate implementation finding in the evidence note. Your answer establishes the intended meaning; it does not certify or repair those paths.

What your answer affects

Collection and analysis should identify the organization and preserve the source supporting its label role. Artist affiliation, ownership, distribution, publishing and credits need their own supported links. A mention must not create all of those relationships automatically. Search and saved trackers should use the same meaning, and later corrections must preserve identity and supporting history.

This approval retires the proposed separate Music Label kind in the intended model, while preserving Music Label as a company type. The audit must still determine safe database changes, compatibility, multiple company roles, relationship details and downstream consumers before implementation. Nothing is migrated or automatically scheduled by this answer.

No further answer is needed for this placement. The general company/type distinction stays settled. The review desk lists the remaining independent choices.
