Recorded definition and use
Hired to produce a commissioned track, re-record or cover a song for a campaign, produce an artist collaboration, or deliver the produced recording of a sonic logo or brand theme; buyers ask for music production alongside composition on original-music briefs.
The craft of producing a finished musical recording — arranging, performing/recording, programming, and producing the track itself: turning music into the produced record heard in the work. Distinct from writing the music (Composition) and from finishing the full soundtrack (Mixing & Mastering).
Tag it when…
Tag on evidence that the musical RECORDING was produced for the work: credits naming a music producer, music house, or recording/production of an original or re-recorded track; a bespoke cover or re-arrangement of a known song made for the campaign is a strong signal.
Never tag it when…
Never tag for a straight licensed catalog track — placement of existing recordings is not production craft. The act of writing the music goes to Music Composition instead; the technical capture of sessions goes to Audio Engineering; final soundtrack balancing goes to Audio Mixing & Mastering. Never infer this leaf from music simply sounding professional.
Comparison notes for 4 other entries
These recorded notes compare this entry with related services, disciplines, crafts or other descriptions. Their wording remains subject to review.
- audio production music composition — Composition is authorship of the music; Production is the making of the recording. A bespoke cover of an existing song is Production without Composition.
- audio production audio mixing mastering — Production builds the music track; Mixing & Mastering finishes and balances the piece's final soundtrack (music + VO + SFX together).
- audio production audio engineering — Engineering is the technical capture/signal craft of the session; Production is the creative shaping of the record.
- video production music video — The music-video FILM is Video Production craft; producing the song's recording is this leaf. A branded music video may carry both, each on its own evidence.
At what size it applies
Asset grain in practice (§3 IS-test): the produced track underlies the whole piece, so tag at asset on evidence — or leave the claim to the credit graph (content_credit). A moment tag is almost never right because production applies to the track, not a beat within it.
