Print & Physical Design

Recorded vocabulary snapshot. This page is generated from a saved database extract, not a live connection. Rebuilding the site does not refresh its measurements. Draft wording comes from review notes; check recorded decisions for approved meaning. Stored values alone do not prove current prompt or filter behavior.

part of Creative Production · recorded level: Discipline · 0 pieces of work carry it · 5 entries in its comparison notes

The level names are Service → Discipline → Craft. This page uses the level recorded in the snapshot. Its definition and parent links still need individual review; the level name is not approval of either.

Recorded definition and use

A brand hires this discipline when its identity has to exist in the physical world: launch packaging and shelf presence, print and OOH collateral, trade-show booths and retail environments, signage and wayfinding, in-store displays and experiential builds.

The craft field of design made for physical output — printed matter, product packaging, and built brand environments. An L1 DISCIPLINE under the Creative Production service (live parent = svc_creative_production, verified; it does NOT parent under svc_physical_experiential). Parent of exactly three L2 leaves: Print Production, Packaging Design, and Environmental Design — work whose final medium is ink, substrate, or physical space rather than a screen.

Tag it when…

Tag when the showcased work is a physically produced design artifact — a printed piece, a product pack, or a designed brand space — preferring the specific leaf (Print Production / Packaging Design / Environmental Design). An L1-grain tag is legal (CM1) when the physical-design craft is evident but the leaf cannot be determined from the item.

Never tag it when…

Never tag screen-only design work — layouts, identities, or graphics with no physical output shown go to the Design discipline (design_graphic_design, design_logo_branding, UI Design). Never tag merely because the footage depicts a physical scene or venue — the designed physical artifact must be the craft on show. Industrial design of the product object itself goes to design_product_design. The digital-vs-physical medium of the CONTENT ITEM is irrelevant (boundary law: the item's own format/content-type is never a craft basis): a video or photo documenting physical design work still carries this discipline; the film/photo crafts tag additionally.

Comparison notes for 5 other entries

These recorded notes compare this entry with related services, disciplines, crafts or other descriptions. Their wording remains subject to review.

  • disc design — Design covers screen/general visual craft; Print & Physical Design requires the physical deliverable (printed, packaged, or built) to be the work shown. The same layout craft shown only on screen stays in Design.
  • svc physical experiential (Physical Activations & Experiential, service L0) — A neighbor row, NOT this branch's parent (live parent = svc_creative_production). It is the sell-side credit/offer tier — never a classify target (services-vs-craft boundary law, Canon v2.2 §1). Content classifies to this discipline's leaves; the service row surfaces via lenses/credits.
  • design product design — Product Design is the form/function of the product object itself; this discipline covers the pack it ships in, the print around it, and the space it sells in.
  • disc photography — A photograph OF printed/packaged/built work co-tags Photography for the photo craft; it does not replace the physical-design tag when the physical design is the showcased deliverable.
  • disc video production — A case-study or brand film ABOUT physical work carries Video Production crafts for the film itself and this discipline (or its leaf) for the physical work shown — co-tag, never either/or. If the film only passes through a venue without the designed artifact being the subject, only the film crafts apply.

At what size it applies

Asset tag when the whole item IS or documents a physical-design deliverable (a pack showcase, a printed campaign, a booth case film) — §3 acid test: 'would you say the whole piece IS this, to a buyer?'. A beat inside a broader film that shows printed, packaged, or built brand work is a MOMENT on that segment (content_segment junction), never a whole-item claim.
