Conceptual Photography

Recorded vocabulary snapshot. This page is generated from a saved database extract, not a live connection. Rebuilding the site does not refresh its measurements. Draft wording comes from review notes; check recorded decisions for approved meaning. Stored values alone do not prove current prompt or filter behavior.

The level names are Service → Discipline → Craft. This page uses the level recorded in the snapshot. Its definition and parent links still need individual review; the level name is not approval of either.

Recorded definition and use

Hired for brand-platform and big-idea campaigns, artistic and inspirational advertising, and thought-leadership visuals — when a brand needs a photograph that argues an idea rather than shows a subject.

Idea-first photography where the image is constructed to embody an abstract concept, metaphor, or symbolic message — surreal staging, visual metaphors, and constructed symbols rather than literal depiction of a person, product, or place.

Tag it when…

Tag when the photograph's real subject is a concept: surreal or impossible staging, deliberate visual metaphor (objects standing in for ideas), symbolic composition where decoding the meaning is the intended viewer experience. The literal contents of the frame are a vehicle, not the message.

Never tag it when…

Never tag stylized-but-literal frames — a beautifully art-directed portrait or product story without a symbolic argument goes to photography_editorial. Never tag artful object arrangements whose point is the composition itself (that goes to photography_still_life). Do not use this leaf as a catch-all for any 'artsy' photograph — the constructed idea must be checkable in-frame. A conceptual TREATMENT of another leaf's literal subject with no in-frame decodable metaphor tags the subject leaf: treatment words that cross specializations are execution/style axis territory (canon §1 acid test), never grounds to move the leaf.

Comparison notes for 3 other entries

These recorded notes compare this entry with related services, disciplines, crafts or other descriptions. Their wording remains subject to review.

  • photography editorial — Editorial stylizes a literal subject; conceptual constructs the frame around an abstract idea. Ask: 'is there a metaphor to decode?' — yes → conceptual.
  • photography still life — Both can be object-only studio constructions; still life's point is the arrangement/composition, conceptual's point is the symbolic message the arrangement encodes.
  • photography product — A product shown literally, however dramatic the lighting, is product photography; it becomes conceptual only when the product is a prop in a visual metaphor.

At what size it applies

Asset tag when the item IS a conceptual photograph. Moment tag when a symbolic still beat appears inside a larger asset (e.g., a metaphor-image interstitial inside a brand film or page).
